Most people think of heartburn as a normal part of life – uncomfortable, but normal. Everyone they know gets heartburn at one time or another. They know the television ads by heart – the ones that show people thumping or rubbing their chests to indicate they have heartburn. Typically, people take an antacid and suffer until the burning sensation passes.

Heartburn symptoms are indeed common, but that is no reason to treat them too lightly. Heartburn symptoms do not happen by accident. They are a warning issued by your digestive system.

Heartburn symptoms must be considered in the context of their closely-related concerns: acid indigestion, acid reflux, acid regurgitation, non-cardiac chest pain, and sour stomach. Heartburn symptoms should also be considered in relation to GERD symptoms.

Heartburn symptoms closely resemble the symptoms of all the above, especially symptoms of acid.

Frequently-described Heartburn Symptoms

Heartburn symptoms are most frequently described as a burning sensation. Some may say they feel heat or warmth in the upper abdomen. Others describe heartburn symptoms as pain in the lower chest.

Heartburn symptoms occur behind the sternum – the central breastbone. The location, near the heart, is the reason for the name “heartburn,” but the heart is not involved. Some have described their heartburn symptoms as a feeling that the heart is on fire.

In addition to the burning pain, heartburn symptoms can include trouble swallowing, nausea, gas, and bloating.

Heartburn symptoms last as long as 2 hours for some. Some people have difficulty sleeping due to heartburn symptoms.

Why Heartburn Symptoms Need Attention

Heartburn symptoms, whether mild or serious, occasional or frequent, need attention. Let’s look at some of the reasons, beginning with one of the most serious.

1. Heartburn symptoms can feel much like heart attack symptoms. If you have heart disease, or are at risk for heart disease, seek medical attention immediately, even though you believe it may be heartburn. It is not worth risking serious or fatal results.

2. Heartburn symptoms, if frequent, can lead to serious medical concerns such as cancer of the esophagus. The acid that washes back into the esophagus can damage the sensitive linings of the esophagus, and lead to GERD. As it worsens, cancer can develop.

3. Heartburn symptoms are not isolated pain. They occur because something is not right in your digestive system. Heartburn symptoms are warnings. Just as you should not ignore warning lights on you car’s dashboard, you should not ignore the warning provided by heartburn symptoms.

Cause of Heartburn Symptoms

Heartburn symptoms are caused by a malfunction of the sphincter muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. This ring of muscle, the lower esophageal sphincter, is known in shorthand as the LES.

The first job of the LES is to open so that swallowed food can enter the stomach. Its second job is to close quickly to keep stomach food and juices from washing back into the esophagus.

When the LES is weakened, pressured, or relaxes inappropriately, it malfunctions. Stomach juices, and even bits of food, reflux (wash back) into the esophagus. Since the linings of the esophagus are not meant to handle the strong stomach acids, the nerves react with a sensation of burning.

Listen to Heartburn Symptoms

Since heartburn symptoms are the result of a malfunctioning LES, it makes sense to learn why the muscle is malfunctioning.

1. Does it need more oxygen?

2. Does it need more potassium or other electrolyte?

3. Is it dehydrated?

4. Would exercise strengthen it?

When another muscle malfunctions, we treat the muscle to strengthen it. Ask your physician how to strengthen your lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Disclaimer: The author is not a professional health care provider, and intends the above for educational purposes only.

What is heartburn?

Heartburn, also called acid indigestion and acid reflux, is the most common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD. It occurs when the acids from absorbing foods back up into the lower throat region. The refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Although it can be a nuisance at any time of day, for most people it is worse after a meal at night.

Acid Reflux affects millions of people daily. Ten percent of the population suffers from it at least once a week, and twenty-five percent of pregnant women experience daily heartburn. Other causes of heartburn are lying down after a meal, bending over, and a persistent hiatal hernia.

Its symptoms

Symptoms of acid reflux may include persistent sore throat, hoarseness, chronic cough, asthma, heart-like chest pain and a feeling of a lump in the throat. It feels like a burning chest pain beginning behind the breastbone and moving upward to the neck and throat. Heartburn pain can be mistaken for the pain associated with heart disease or a heart attack, but there are differences. Acid reflux disease can cause a number of symptoms in addition to heartburn, including: Regurgitation, a bitter or sour taste at the back of your throat, belching, bloating and early satiety (feeling full too soon).

The burning, pressure, or pain of heartburn can last as long as 2 hours and is often worse after eating. Elevating the head of the bed on 6-inch blocks or sleeping on a specially designed wedge reduces heartburn by allowing gravity to minimize reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus.

Foods That Trigger Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Find out what foods in your diet can aggravate heartburn and acid reflux. Certain foods and beverages to avoid are chocolate, fried or fatty foods, coffee, alcoholic beverages, and acidic foods.

Common foods that can worsen reflux symptoms include citrus fruits, garlic and onions, mint flavorings, spicy foods, tomato-based foods, like spaghetti sauce, salsa, chili, and pizza.

Remedies

Antacids, such as Alka-Seltzer, Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids, and Riopan, are usually the first drugs recommended for quick relief of heartburn and other mild GERD symptoms. Antacids taken regularly can neutralize acid in the esophagus and stomach and stop heartburn. However, because antacids are short acting and do not prevent heartburn, they are less useful for frequent or severe heartburn.

Herbal remedies can include ginger, and even chamomile, but a natural cure for heartburn could be as simple as opening your food cupboard as many healthy foods are well known for their beneficial effects on our internal system.

Decreasing the size of portions at mealtime may also help control symptoms. Smoking is also a contributor of GERD symptoms and should be eliminated if symptoms persist. Testing your pH regularly is helpful in monitoring the acidity level of the esophagus.

Over time, patterns can be established and many people report elimination or reduction of acid reflux symptoms after changing their diet accordingly to eliminate problematic food or drink.

Medical Treatment

See your health care provider if you have had symptoms of GERD and have been using antacids or other over-the-counter reflux medications for more than 2 weeks.

Proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers can relieve symptoms and heal the esophageal lining in almost everyone who has GERD. Because drugs work in different ways, combinations of medications may help control symptoms. If your symptoms do not improve with lifestyle changes or medications, you may need additional tests. Endoscopic techniques used to treat chronic heartburn include the Bard Endo Cinch system, NDO Plicator, and the Stretta system.

Surgery is an option when medicine and lifestyle changes do not help to manage GERD symptoms.

When the brilliant colors of autumn are gone and the weather starts to turn a bit nippy, we look ahead to the holiday season with wonderful images of the past dancing in our heads. It’s a magical time when we are reunited with friends and family; a time when children are the happiest and all of us are at our very best. Needless to say delicious food will be the cornerstone of all this festivity.

Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years, it’s truly a challenge to prepare food that is acid reflux friendly. During the holiday season, we are tempted to indulge in all those fatty, sweet and acidic foods that we enjoyed so much in childhood. We like to think of this as comfort food, however, acid indigestion is anything but comfort to those who suffer from it.

Complete abstinence from acidic, fatty and sweet food would defeat the purpose of celebrating the holidays. Dishes that do not bring back memories of childhood would do the same. Thankfully, there are simple ways to make seasonal dishes healthier without ruining all the fun.

If you can’t resist that holiday drink or chocolate dessert then it would be wise to let moderation be your guide. Also, keep in mind that eating too much of even the most alkaline food can cause indigestion, as well.

I have created what I consider to be the perfect holiday menu. The dishes below retain the important flavors of the season, yet are healthy enough for most acid reflux sufferers to enjoy in comfort. The entire family will love this dinner. It’s also quick and uncomplicated to prepare. This menu will feed six easily with leftover beef.

Bon appetite!

SOUP COURSE

Country Style Creamed Pumpkin Soup

1 pat of unsalted butter

¼ cup natural chicken stock (Kitchen Basics, if possible)

1 Cup finely minced yellow onion

15 oz can pure pumpkin

Chicken stock (fill empty pumpkin can)

½ cup maple syrup

¼ tsp. cinnamon

Freshly grated nutmeg

¼ cup half & half

Crumbled nitrate free bacon, chopped chives and ¼ sour cream in squeeze bottle (optional)

In a 2 qt. soup pot heat butter and stock to the simmer.

Add minced onion and cook covered stirring occasionally until tender and translucent.

Blend in pumpkin and can of stock. Cook at the simmer for 10 minutes.

Blend in maple syrup and spices. Simmer another 5 minutes.

Take off heat and add half & half and mix well.

Note: This dish is best made the day before. Reheat in a double boiler.

Serve in a soup terrine and offer garnish on the side. Garnish with bacon for the non-gerd guests and chives for others. After plating the soup, make decorative zigzag patterns with sour cream from the squeeze bottle.

MAIN COURSE

Roasted Beef Tenderloin with Caramelized Root Vegetables

1 (4 to 5 pound) trimmed & tied tenderloin roast

Olive oil

Head of garlic, peeled and sliced

Salt and pepper

Fresh rosemary chopped

3 parsnips & 3 turnips peeled and cut into 1” pieces

½ pound peeled baby carrots

15 small pearl onions, peeled (make an X with knife at the root end)

1 pound new potatoes cut in half

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

Fresh chopped thyme

Parsley for garnish

Heat oven to 425 degrees F.

Place roast in roasting pan.

Massage thin coat of olive oil into roast.

Rub sliced garlic over roast and discard.

Season with salt & pepper to taste.

Insert meat thermometer into thickest area of roast.

Place vegetables in bowl & coat well with olive.

Season with salt & pepper to taste and mix well. Sprinkle with chopped thyme.

Empty vegetables into roasting pan around beef.

Roast for 40 – 50 minutes until the thermometer reads 140 degrees F.

Stir vegetables several times to keep moist.

When beef is done, remove to warm platter and tent with foil.

Let roast rest for 20 minutes.

If vegetables are not done, stir and continue to roast until tender and caramelized. Garnish with parsley.

Serve with horseradish sauce to those who are non-gerd and au jus from the cutting board, for those more sensitive.

Note: If using a convection roasting oven, adjust the cooking time accordingly.

SALAD/CHEESE COURSE

Belgium Endive, Toasted Walnuts & Blue Cheese with Walnut Vinaigrette

6 heads Belgium endive leaves washed & dried

1 cup toasted walnuts (toast lightly in heavy pan and shake skins off)

½ pound crumbled good blue cheese (Gorgonzola, Stilton or Roquefort)

4 tbsps. Sherry vinegar

1 large shallot finely minced

¾ cup walnut oil

¼ cup olive oil

Salt & pepper to taste:

In a bowl, whisk vinegar & shallots together. Slowly drizzle oil whisking continually until dressing becomes thick & creamy. Season with salt and pepper.

Toss together in a salad bowl; endive, walnuts, blue cheese and dressing.

DESSERT COURSE

Rustic Apple Tart with Apricot glaze

5 Golden Delicious apples, cored, peeled, quartered & sliced ¼ inch thick (toss in bowl with a little lemon juice to retard discoloration)

¼ cup sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

½ cup apricot jam

¼ cup dark rum

1 sheet commercial puff pastry (Dufour if you can find it, or any brand in the super market freezer case)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Slice apples with a mandolin or by hand and place in bowl tossing with lemon juice.

Place sheet of pastry on floured surface and turn edges in to form a border.

Place pastry on parchment paper covered cookie sheet & adjust.

Arrange apple slices neatly overlapping in alternate rows.

Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

Place on middle rack of hot oven.

Bake for 40 – 45 minutes, or until golden brown.

Microwave apricot jam & rum in plastic wrap covered bowl on high for 30 seconds. Whisk to blend.

Paint finished tart with apricot mixture with pastry brush while still warm.

Serve with ice cream or crème fraiche. Garnish with a sprig of mint or fresh raspberries.

Note: This wonderfully festive dessert can be prepared hours before dinner is served. If you should use the wrong apple and, or if your apple patterns go amiss, don’t despair. You can’t go wrong with this rustic dish. It will look appetizing anyway it turns out. Just say that you intended it to be that way!

Bon appetite!

For more free recipes, articles and important information about acid reflux, please visit:

Reflux Gone Forever

© Wind Publishing

Does the combination of a particular heartburn diet and changes to a healthy lifestyle get you heartburn relief? Recent studies bring information to show that new diet plans can really lower heartburn and simultaneously make major improvements in quality of life in general. But the question remains, will a diet really bring permanent heartburn for you personally? Classical medicine has run foul of huge populations of heartburn victims in this respect, because of the potentially dangerous side effects that it produces as well as its poor record of results over a long duration.

Because heartburn is only a symptom of a more complicated medical condition known as GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) or acid reflux, we need to know if new diet plans will act on the true, underlying causes. It is important to know that recurring heartburn cannot be dispatched in a permanent way without a full holistic treatment that clearly identifies the root causes.

A circular muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a key part of the syndrome of heartburn. When acid escaping via the LES corrodes the cells lining the esophagus, this causes the unpleasant burning sensation known as acid indigestion or heartburn. GERD is the result of this valve-like muscle between the stomach and the esophagus weakening and no longer keeping the stomach contents away from the esophagus.

New diet habits must bring down this excess of stomach acidity, but must also take account of a malfunctioning sphincter. Therefore new diet habits must simultaneously work with both aspects of acid reflux. We describe seven simple axes for diets below as initial actions to get to a holistic, all-natural treatment for GERD:

1. Reduce the quantity of each meal. The bigger the meal, the more the stress on the digestive system, the more the level of stomach acidity and the greater the risk of compounding an existing acid reflux condition. 5-6 smaller meals per day is better than 2-3 big meals.

2. Allow your stomach to get its work done 2-3 hours for a light meal, rather than the 5-6 hours for a big one. This is especially important at the end of the day, so as to finish digestion and avoid lying down when acid can still reflux towards your esophagus. Therefore, eat a light meal for the last one of the day, before helping digestion by going for a short walk.

3. Chew and eat your food in a leisurely way. This prevents air from being ingested at the same time as the food, and avoids pressure in the stomach and bloating which all put extra pressure on the esophageal sphincter, with the resulting splash back of stomach acid.

4. Lessen coffee intake and drink herbal tea instead, as well as reducing intake of peppermint, soda and alcohol, high-fat or spicy meals, citrus juices, coffee and caffeine, chocolate and foods based largely on tomatoes. Don’t eat food that irritates your intestines, because this in turn can cause your esophageal sphincter to open at the wrong time.

5. Studies done in Sweden support the theory that acid reflux danger can be reduced by 50% by adopting a high fiber diet and that high-fiber diets are effective for optimizing digestion and sweeping away toxic matter.

6. Dairy produce, especially milk, should be cut down. It causes for more acid, mucus and allergies, all conditions that stimulate Candida overgrowth and bring on further digestive problems contributing to GERD.

7. Because obesity and excess weight also act to lever open the lower esophageal sphincter, reduce calorie intake as well.

The right program using the diet guidelines above will reduce the risk of GERD and at the same time increase your fitness and health.

A food plan to combat heartburn with the right inner balance is the first part of a full natural and holistic program against acid reflux. It is the only way to permanently improve this condition. Diet plans are just one part of the whole solution, in the same way that heartburn is a fragment of the whole acid heartburn picture. All the factors need to be treated by the solution in order to bring an effective resolution of the problem.

Heartburn is the condition with characteristic irritation around the breast area and back. Heartburn is often misconceived as any heart diseases because of the discomfort in the chest, however, the fact is that heartburn is not related to heart disease, but it is purely a digestive disorder.

Heartburn occurs when the digestive contents in the stomach deviate from its normal digestive path and retrieve back to esophagus. Heartburn becomes worse with serious complications such as GERD and esophagus cancer when it becomes frequent. Heartburn has to be clearly distinguished from acid indigestion, which is the irritation in the duodenum. Most people consider occasional heartburn as the indication of the body’s incompatibility with any particular food or consequences of unhealthy eating habits however, it is advised to have an expert consultation to avoid future complications.

Causes

The irritation is caused because the esophagus lining cannot withstand the acidic gastric juice. Heartburn occurs as a result of the faulty condition of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle of the esophagus. The underlying factors for the condition are not so evident. Hiatal hernia, a condition in which the change of the place of stomach and diaphragm weakness occurs, is suspected as a major reason for heartburn. Improper diet, such as spicy or acidic and bad habits such as cigarette, alcohol may disturb the muscles. The faulty posture also will contribute.

Symptoms

The characteristic symptom of heartburn is the burning sensation in the chest area which can be felt as far as the abdomen. The exact position of the irritation will be lower the breast bone which is the gullet of esophagus while in some cases the irritation will be also felt in the midline of the back. In severe cases, irritation will be transformed into pain.

Diagnosis

Physician can easily diagnose heartburn from its characteristic symptoms. Only in chronic conditions diagnostic tests such as endoscopy and pH monitoring are performed.

Treatment

Usually heartburn patients resort to over the counter tablets however, it has to be avoided since it may lead to complications. Physicians usually prescribe antacids such as Gelusil, Maalox and Mylanta to neutralize the acidity. H-2 receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors are also prescribed to reduce the recurrence of the symptom. Alternative medicines suggest drinking neutralizing drinks to reduce the irritation while drinking water will be an immediate remedy to alleviate the heartburn.

Prevention

As heartburn is mostly associated with life style factors, strict control of the triggering factors can help to control it. The avoidance of risky factors such as excessive eating, spicy and acidic diet, and wearing tight waist clothes will help to reduce the occurrence of heartburn. Maintaining a high head position, can avoid it, while lying down.

Heartburn is a common disease which does not need to be serious. However, special attention has to be taken in its frequent recurrence as it may be an indication of other serious disorders.

Heartburn, a painful, burning feeling in the chest, is caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. It is a burning discomfort that is generally felt in the chest just behind the breastbone. The burning sensation results when harsh stomach juices come in contact with and irritate the delicate lining of the esophagus. (Also known as acid indigestion or pyrosis). A burning sensation felt in the chest and throat when acid from the stomach leaks up into the esophagus. During pregnancy, the muscle at the top of the stomach that usually prevents digestive acids from going back up relaxes, allowing gastric juices to splash back. Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw.

Continual bouts of heartburn can be a symptom of a more serious condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Frequent or severe heartburn may limit daily activities and lead to further complications such as ulcers in the esophagus. With proper understanding of heartburn and treatment, relief can be obtained from this condition.

Antacids, acid blockers, and perhaps surgery may provide relief from heartburn and prevent it from turning into more serious disease.

For mild or occasional symptoms, simple lifestyle modifications can be helpful. Avoid large meals.

Avoid caffeine (coffee, teas, some soft drinks).

Avoid foods or drinks that reduce pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter such as chocolate, peppermint, caffeine-containing beverages, and fatty or fried foods.

Avoid foods that damage the esophagus such as spicy foods, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes and tomato sauces.

After eating, beware of activities that force acid back into your esophagus. Such activities include lifting, straining, coughing, and wearing tight clothing.

Avoid the foods and beverages that trigger your heartburn symptoms or relax the sphincter muscle. (These may include onions, peppermint, chocolate, caffeine-containing beverages and foods, citrus fruits or juices, tomatoes, or high-fat foods). A good way to figure out what foods cause your symptoms is to keep a heartburn diary.

Shed some pounds. If you are overweight, losing weight by following a healthy weight loss plan can help relieve your symptoms.

Stop smoking. Nicotine can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that controls the opening between the esophagus and stomach and prevents the acid-containing contents of the stomach from entering the esophagus.

Many women will experience heartburn during their pregnancy. Even for women who have never experienced it before, heartburn may occur for the first time while they are pregnant. That burning sensation in the chest and throat, and sour, acidic taste in the mouth, may become an all too familiar sensation for some of them.

Treatment medication for Heartburn

Antacids work by neutralizing acid in the stomach. They are usually the first remedy doctors will recommend patients take to relief heartburn symptoms. Antacids include Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, Gaviscon, and Chooz.

H2 blockers, also called H2 receptor agonists, are medicines that reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. H2 blockers include Axid, Pepcid, Tagamet, and Zantac.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of medications that prevent the release of acid in the stomach and intestines. PPIs include Aciphex, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, and Protonix.

When the lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t close properly or the stomach content reflux into the esophagus or flow back, the gastroesophageal reflux disease appears.

It is known that the esophagus has the role of carrying food from the mouth to the stomach, and the lower esophageal sphincter which is a ring of muscle situated at the bottom of the esophagus is acting like a valve between the esophagus and stomach.

When there is a stomach acid reflux, the lining of the esophagus is touched, and a burning sensation in the chest or throat appears. This is the so-called heartburn. Sometimes, it may happen that fluid to be tasted in the back of the mouth, fact known under the name of acid indigestion.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause serious problems, and we may consider that a person has this disease if heartburn appears more than twice a week.

The gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause symptoms like acid regurgitation and persistent heartburn. Not always heartburn is present, there were cases of persons that had gastroesophageal reflux disease and no heartburn appeared. But these persons experienced other symptoms instead, like hoarseness in the morning, pain in the chest, or painful swallowing. Bad breath or a dry cough can also be provoked by this disease.

Studies revealed that the gastroesophageal reflux disease appears more often in children and infants. Medical attention is very important in these cases, especially if this problem appears regularly and causes discomfort. The doctor may recommend that you keep the infant for 30 minutes after feeding in an upright position. Burping the infant several times during feeding is also a thing that should be done.

If the patient is an older child, the doctor may recommend avoiding sodas that contain caffeine, spicy foods like pizza, chocolate, peppermint, and also fried and fatty foods or acidic foods like oranges and tomatoes. A wise thing to do is to avoid eating 2 to 3 hours before bed-time. It is also possible that the doctor may prescribe medicine, and in rare cases surgery is needed.

Some factors that contribute to the apparition of the gastroesophageal reflux are: smoking, alcohol, overweight and pregnancy. There are some foods that can be associated to gastroesophageal reflux too. Some of them are: citrus fruits, chocolate, garlic and onions, mint flavorings, spicy foods, fatty and fried foods and drinks with caffeine.

A hiatal hernia may also contribute to gastroesophageal reflux apparition. This hernia appears when the upper part of the stomach is above the diaphragm. It is known that the diaphragm helps the lower esophageal sphincter to keep acid from coming up into the esophagus, and when hiatal hernia is present, it is easier for the acid to come up.

There are multiple factors that can favorize gastroesophageal reflux apparition, but nobody knows exactly why this disease occurs.

For more resources about acid reflux or especially about acid reflux symptoms please click this link http://www.acid-reflux-info-guide.com/acid-reflux-symptoms.htm

Will the right mix of a special heartburn diet and healthier lifestyle changes make for a safer option? Studies done recently show that new diet habits can really relieve heartburn and at the same time make big improvements in your overall quality of life.

Before we get into the nature of the new diet habits, it is important to understand that chronic heartburn cannot be treated for a permanent solution without a full holistic solution that clearly targets the fundamental problem. This is because heartburn is only a symptom of a complex medical problem known as GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) or acid reflux.

New diet habits must therefore handle both aspects that bring on acid reflux. They must reduce excessive acidity in the stomach but also work in conjunction with the weakened sphincter. We set out seven simple guidelines for diets below as the preliminary step for a holistic, all-natural GERD solution:

1. Eat smaller meals. Big meals stress the digestive system unduly, more stomach acid is manufactured and an existing acid reflux condition can be worsened. Instead of 2-3 big meals per day, eat 5-6 smaller meals.

2. Give your stomach a better possibility to work in the 2-3 hour window after a light meal, rather than the 5-6 hours for a heavy one. This is much better planning for the last meal of the day, to avoid lying down when acid can still flow back along your esophageal passage. So eat your last meal of the day as a light one and go for a short walk if you can, to aid digestion.

3. Don’t gobble your food. Chew it properly to prevent air being sucked in, which makes the stomach balloon and pushes open the esophageal sphincter, this opening the way for stomach acid to reflux.

4. Don’t eat food that irritates the lining of your digestive system, which in turn can cause your esophageal sphincter to relax when it should not. Choose herbal tea rather than coffee and reduce intake of high-fat and spicy dishes, peppermint, coffee and caffeine, citrus juices, soda and alcohol, chocolate and any food with a large percentage of tomato.

5. Studies done in Sweden support the theory that acid reflux danger can be reduced by 50% by adopting a high fiber diet and that high-fiber diets are effective for optimizing digestion and sweeping away toxic matter.

6. Reduce intake of dairy produce, in particular milk. Milk encourages acid, allergies and mucus, which in turn encourage Candida overgrowth and further digestive problems leading to GERD.

7. Cut down on calories. Obesity and excess weight also act to force open the lower esophageal sphincter the wrong way.

The right program using the diet guidelines above will reduce the risk of GERD and at the same time increase your fitness and health.

This is just one part of the treatment. Heartburn is just one piece of the acid heartburn puzzle and the other pieces also need to be treated to really solve this problem. An anti-heartburn diet that is correctly balanced is the first part of a complete natural and holistic program to prevent acid reflux. In this way and only in this way, you will be able to halt this problem permanently.
