Acid reflux symptoms are often misread, or thought to be something else. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is another name for acid reflux. GERD is are result of the acid in the stomach backing up and causing irritation and inflammation in the esophagus. Acid reflux symptoms can seem like a heart attack, asthma attack, or other more serious complication. Many unnecessary hospital visits are a result of people misdiagnosing symptoms of GERD.

Heartburn

The most common acid reflux symptom is heartburn. Heartburn is named because it feels like your chest is burning. Heartburn can also be felt in the area of the neck and throat. Somebody who has never experienced heart disease can feel as if they are experiencing a heart attack. Heartburn can be very painful but relief can typically be found with antacids and light exercise. It is always better to be safe. If you are unsure if the burning in your chest is heartburn it is best to seek medical attention.

Coughing and Wheezing

Coughing and wheezing that is caused by GERD can be mistaken for asthma or bronchitis. When these symptoms are caused by acid reflux it is because the acid in the stomach is forced into and partially block the airways. This can cause the feeling of being short of breath or the need to cough to force the acid out. Many people pass these acid reflux symptoms off as being caused by smoking. While smoking can certainly cause similar symptoms, they are usually more persistent and don’t resolve themselves. These symptoms can be a sign of underlying conditions, even if they go away and come back later. They should be discussed with a physician.

Children with Acid Reflux Symptoms

Acid reflux disease can cause some symptoms in children that will seem flu-like. Children can experience vomiting and coughing, along with other respiratory symptoms. Vomiting can happen because a child is small and the acid being forced up has nowhere to go but out. Excessive vomiting should be taken seriously as this could cause dehydration in children. Be sure to let your pediatrician know exactly what is going on if your child exhibits symptoms of GERD. It is a good idea to keep a journal of what your child consumes, activities, and symptoms to determine if there is a correlation between them. Finding the trigger of a child’s acid reflux symptoms will make treatment much easier.

Older Adults with GERD

GERD in older adults can cause symptoms that make them feel as if they are choking. This can be especially frightening for an older person because they may not have the strength to cough it up or there might be nobody around to ask for help. Lying down or bending can worsen these symptoms. There are prescription medications that can be helpful to people who experience this.

Acid reflux symptoms can be caused by other medical problems and should never be ignored. Often a treatment plan that includes lifestyle changes can be most beneficial. If you are experiencing trouble with reflux try to cut out foods that may be the source of your symptoms. Quit smoking and stay away from alcohol as these can be major contributors to symptoms of GERD. As always, work with your physician to find the best treatment for acid reflux symptoms.

Heartburn in toddlers and children is not thought to be as common as heartburn in adults. This may be due to the strength of the young LES – the ring of muscle that controls the flow of swallowed food and water from the esophagus into the stomach.

Heartburn in toddlers and children is, nonetheless, a real concern. It may be simple heartburn or acid reflux – or it could be a symptom of a more serious underlying medical concern. Repeated episodes of acid reflux or heartburn in toddlers and children should trigger an appointment with your pediatrician.

Preventing Heartburn in Toddlers and Children

If your pediatrician finds no underlying reasons for heartburn in your child, you will want to take steps to prevent it. Prevention will differ from one child to the next. What works for one may not work for another. Try these 7 steps and see which works best for your child.

1. Be sure the child’s clothing is not tight at the waist during and immediately after meals. Tight clothing can put pressure on the stomach, which in turn pressures the LES and produces heartburn.

2. Give the child something quiet to do immediately after meals. Returning to active play can pressure the stomach before it has digested the food and prompt heartburn. Children should be instructed not to bend at the waist for 15 to 30 minutes after eating.

3. Heartburn in toddlers and children can often be a matter of excess weight, especially at the waist. Ask your pediatrician what your child’s weight should be. If he or she is overweight, work with the doctor to get them to a healthy weight to prevent heartburn.

4. Serve smaller meals. Overeating will result in a stomach that is too full to do its work properly. The churning motion a too-full stomach can, like the churning motion of an overfilled blender, cause the “lid” to pop open. When that lid is the sphincter ring of muscle, heartburn can result.

5. Serve small snacks between meals. This will allow the child to get enough nourishment, and not be as eager to overeat at meals.

6. Withhold junk food that is high in fat and sugar. Heartburn in toddlers and children can be caused by a diet that is unbalanced, and lacking in nutritious food.

7. Eliminate beverages that contain carbon dioxide (bubbles). Too much gas in the stomach can caused the sphincter to open at the wrong time. Heartburn in toddlers and children is often prevented quickly by disallowing soda pop with the meal.

If you try all of these without gaining relief, you may want to begin a food diary, writing down everything your child eats each day. When heartburn occurs, log it in immediately to see if a specific food has been eaten before each episode. When you visit the pediatrician, show him or her the food diary.

Heartburn in toddlers and children can occur at night. The child may awaken crying and complaining of pain in the upper abdomen or lower chest. Perhaps the heartburn occurs in the evening before going to bed. This type of heartburn can often be avoided by not allowing the child to eat right before going to bed.

Disclaimer: The information in this article is for educational purposes only. Parents who suspect heartburn in toddlers and children should seek advice from the child’s pediatrician.

An old wives tale of for every child a mother has, she loses a tooth always puzzled me. The thought was that the developing baby pulled calcium from the teeth and therefore rotted. I was in disbelief but wondered why cavities did seem to form on pregnant women. Then I went through it and spoke with other mothers about it.

Acid reflux, indigestions and morning sickness can develop along with other stomach upsetting things during pregnancy. How do we treat it? Ginger ale, soda crackers, Tums (antacids), and various other high carbohydrate foods make us feel better. These all have carbohydrates in them that leads to more acid production, especially the constant chewing of Tums. Acid coming from the stomach lowers the pH of the mouth causing a double whammy. It takes normal saliva 2 hours to reduce the amount of acids ingested from any carbohydrate back to normal (7). Teeth start to lose the minerals in them at a pH 5.5. The constant intake of acids plus the reflux from stomach acids leave pregnant moms at a loss. It is an acid battle in the mouth that dissolves the teeth.

Another occurrence in pregnant patients is the hormonal rise causing pregnancy gingivitis. Gum disease developing in expectant moms has been linked to low birth weight babies. It is recommended that the bacteria are flushed out of places the toothbrush and floss doesn’t reach in order to break up those colonies. It is not about clean teeth but healthy gums.

So, what do we do about the cavities and gum disease so prevalent in expectant moms? Watch the diet. Try to eat things that are low in carbohydrates or limit the frequency. Take your pre-natal vitamins. Talk with your doctor about the possibility of an acid reducing medication, (I did and I could sleep through the night without heartburn).

Another thing that is vital for all parents to know – this is shocking. Babies are not born with the bacteria to create cavities. We actually inoculate them with it. We do this by kissing, tasting our baby’s food, sharing spoons and drinks. All parents should be tested for the levels of Strep Mutans before the baby is born. This way if you have high levels of the bacteria, treatment rinses is available through Carifree.com to create a healthy oral environment. It is possible for your child to never have a cavity if you do not give the little one the bugs it takes to create them.

Make sure you visit your dentist and try to get a full series of x-rays after your baby is delivered.

Research have shown that Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER), generally called Acid Reflux, is common among children of varying age groups, especially in infants, but is often overlooked. About fifty percent of babies, within the first six months of their lives, will experience acid reflux in one way or another. This is extremely painful for the newborn, but may not necessarily be treated as a threat to health in a long term sense unless there are other symptoms that accompany acid reflux. Acid reflux, to infants, is more likely to be the discomfort that causes the pain more than the reflux itself.

Nature Of Acid Reflux

GER occurs when food and gastric acid come back up from the stomach to the esophagus. This happens during or after a meal and is quite painful because of the acid present in the stomach contents and the amount of actual stomach acid that will be present in the throat. The discomfort for this condition is unbelievably painful in infants. For this reason, it is important to know the symptoms of acid reflux in babies so that it can be treated and the child can be comforted when a reflux actually occurs.

The young’s immature digestive systems are easy victims to acid reflux but as they grow up (up to one or two years of age), most children naturally come out of the problem.

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux In Children

There are many symptoms present in cases of acid reflux in children. More commonly seen symptoms include: pain, sudden crying, irritability, colic; repeated vomiting or just spitting-up; losing appetite; unable to sleep well; emission of wet burp or wet hiccup sounds; bad breath. It is essential to bear in mind that these symptoms may not necessarily mean that the infant is suffering from Acid Reflux, but are signs that means the overall digestive system of the child deserves some attention and adequate information. Remember to not get carried away with it, but at the same time nothing should be left unchecked.

Less common symptoms include: difficult to swallow food, gagging, and/or choking; throat infection and the need for constant eating and drinking to soothe it; deprived weight gain, loss of weight; husky voice; respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, noisy breathing, pneumonia etc.; ear infections, excessive salvation, sinus infections drooling, and peculiar neck arching.

Treatment Of Acid Reflux In Children

Various treatments are available to deal with GER in children. Most kids recover from it after turning one year old. Till then, correct positioning and feeding methods will provide relief to them. They are to be positioned upright to prevent food and acid flowing from the stomach into the esophagus with help from gravity. Burping frequently and staying away from spicy, fatty and acidic foods will also help. Medications like antacids, motility medicines, acid suppressors, and acid blockers can also treat acid reflux. But in very serious cases of reflux, surgery is performed.

There are, definitely, cases of acid reflux in infants that are significantly more grave and important than others. Monitoring should be done, all cases should, and a doctor should be alerted if the symptoms turn too serious or if the acid reflux occurs more frequent or consistent. If bleeding or loss of important function occurs due to acid reflux, a pediatrician and a specialist should be consulted at once. This is because the acid reflux has reached a dangerous level and should be examined for other possible problem.

A paediatrician, with proper test done, can identify and resolve acid reflux in children. They will be aware of the problem and how your child is affected; enabling them to take proper samples and diagnose it before getting out of hand. From here, an informed decision can be decided in terms of possible cure options and getting the acid reflux curbed to the best of the abilities. Hopefully, both you and your child can get a good night’s rest with this information.

Reflux Condition And Complications In Acid Reflux In Children

In lots of young babies, regurgitation of some milk, particularly when burping after meals, is a common sight. But beware of complications, usually in the form of heartburn and esophagitis. Acid flowing from the stomach to the esophaugs produces a burning sensation called Heartburn. While reddening and swelling of the esophagus due to acid backflow is known as Esophagitis. It causes extreme pain and can kill appetite. In severe cases, it can cause the inflamed part of the esophagus to bleed. Poor growth, difficulty in swallowing and breathing problems are some other complications

The Most Important Reality

Taking care of the child’s emotional needs is one of the most often-suggested remedy and solutions for acid reflux in children. The primary task is to soothe your child and handle their emotional needs, as this is most damaged by the symptoms of acid reflux. It is a frustrating time, for both parent and child, to deal with the pain and to find a cure for the illness and the symptoms.

Pregnancy is a beautiful dream of every woman after she gets married and both the partners willingly agree to have a child. Every married female dreams to have her own child and takes pride in nurturing her unborn in her womb. A child is a symbol of love between her and her husband, where both share the responsibility to bring their child to this world. Pregnancy is a natural phenomenon and when a woman is pregnant there are certain natural indications that help her to detect the earliest signs of pregnancy. A woman experiences some internal changes in her body like a missed period or vomiting and nausea and a lot many differences and all which are caused due to hormonal imbalances, as a new guest is about to arrive in the family. Here are some early signs of pregnancy which a pregnant woman usually experiences. Some may experience all of these while others may experience a few: – Missed period: This is the most obvious sign of pregnancy. A woman who misses her period has to confirm it for an actual pregnancy by undergoing certain medical tests. Along with this she may feel some other changes too. – Spotting or mild bleeding: This sign shows that the fertilized egg has just embedded itself to the uterus wall after which a slight bleeding is seen. However after this you can get it medically confirmed if you are really pregnant. – Nausea and Morning sickness: Often pregnant ladies tend to vomit in the mornings and feel uneasy at times, this may happen for most of the pregnant ladies. A feeling of full or an empty stomach urges you to vomit out. This may also happen after a morning tea or coffee. The condition may worse and gives you a feeling of Nausea because of a stomach disorder. – Heartburn and Constipation: These are the usual signs and grow with the growth of your baby. The hormonal imbalance slows down your digestion process due to which the bile juice in your stomach rises and you may experience heartburn due to its acidic nature. As your metabolism rate also reduces you face difficulty in digestion thus leading to constipation. – Food cravings and highly developed sense of smell: You often have a strong feeling to eat something with a particular taste to the extent that you wouldn’t give up. This strong desire to eat that particular food is food craving and a pregnant woman cant do without it. Like craving for chocolates or ice-cream, even a pizza or a burger, it can be just anything. She may even response promptly to any kind of smell or aroma, either by vomiting or by going crazy for it. – A change in sense of taste: Some pregnant females often develop a metallic taste, or a sweet taste throughout their pregnancy due to this they may avoid tea, coffee and for that matter some my even switch over to different toothpaste! – More than usual urination: As the uterus grows in size, a pregnant lady often feels like going to a wash room to empty her bladder. The hormone HCG triggers frequent urination. – Irregular frame of mind: This sign is most prominent, you may feel depressed or may feel high, and its all due to your naughty baby in your womb who gives you such mood swings. These varied emotions are due to hormonal changes (just like you feel just before your periods) you may feel irritated sometimes and at other times you may be very happy for no reason at all. – Temperature rise in your body: Just when you are about to conceive or some time after conception your body temperature rises higher than normal. You feel sick at times. – Weary and lethargic: After a few days you find yourself to get tired and low very soon. You just feel like lying on your bed, your body becomes lazy and tired, you try to relax at regular intervals. Your baby wants you to rest, as later on he will be the one to trouble you the most! – Pregnancy test: A positive pregnancy test confirms your pregnancy. It is a clinical method where your urine sample is tested to confirm your pregnancy. Positive test confirms your PREGNANCY.

Acid reflux symptoms in children and infants can be hard to detect. The lack of clear communication is a major stumbling block. Frequently children cannot even tell you where it hurts or give you good clues to what is happening to them. Infants of course can only complain and cry which increases stress levels and urgency. This is especially true for those children suffering from symptoms of acid reflux or gastric esophageal reflux (GER) also known as plain gastric reflux. According to experts the most common acid reflux symptoms in children include frequent or chronic vomiting, persistent cough chest pain, wet burps and regurgitating and reswallowing. Unfortunately some of these symptoms are also common with healthy children and infants.

Additional symptoms of acid reflux in children include bad breath, constant crying (colic), picky eating, sore throat, ear infections, nighttime sleep problems, gagging and choking, drooling, chronic running nose and many more. Any parent will identify with many of these listed symptoms. Every child has one or more of these symptoms before he or she reaches the terrible twos. So what is a father or mother to do since so many of these symptoms are caused by something or many things that have nothing to do with acid reflux symptoms in children? The easiest answer is to consult with your pediatrician or family physician. Children frequently do out grow acid reflux disorders. However, ignoring acid reflux symptoms in children can lead to a more serious condition called GERD or gastro esophageal reflux disease. Basically you cannot afford to take a chance and need to consult with a medical professional that is familiar with acid reflux symptoms in children.

Acid reflux symptoms in children are diagnosed by providing the doctor a list to the child’s observed symptoms. These details and along with a good exam should allow the doctor to make a correct diagnosis. However there are times when additional test may be required especially if gastro esophageal reflux disease is suspected. Many doctors will use a pH probe to determine acid level above the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. This valve or sphincter is supposed to keep stomach acid from flowing up the esophagus. However if the muscle that controls the opening and closing of LES is weak or damaged then acid is allowed to reflux up the esophagus. The pH probe is passed through the nose into the esophagus. This thin tube then left in the lower portion of the esophagus where it measures the pH levels and frequency of gastric reflux over a period of 12 to 24 hours. If high levels of acid reflux are detected then further test may be required. Frequently an endoscope is placed down the esophagus to determine the condition of the LES and damage to the esophagus from acid reflux. If Severe damage is detected a diagnosis of GERD will likely be made requiring further tests and immediate treatment.

Symptoms of acid reflux in children can be treated effectively using changes in care and lifestyle. Simple things that you can use mitigate the symptoms for an infant or small child include keeping the baby upright after feeding even if he or she falls a sleep. Elevating the head of the crib and frequently checking to make sure the baby’s head is higher than it abdomen. Initiating the feeding of solid food will also help. Keep a log of what and when you feed the baby to help you isolate food or drink that may increase the symptoms of acid reflux in your child. Make sure you discuss these options with your doctor prior to applying them.

Symptoms of acid reflux in older children may be addressed and treated by changing what and how they eat. Several smaller meals each day will lessen the pressure on the LES muscle and reduce gastric reflux. Again elevating the head of your childs bed will reduce the pressure on the LES muscle and assure a good nights sleep which in itself reduces stress and increases the well being of the child. Raising the bed a mere 3 inches using a bricks or two 2X4 boards will be sufficient to accomplish the needed incline. Do not let your child lay down for at least 30 minutes after eating. Also do not let your children sit in front of the TV or computer for hours at a time. Exercise is an important factor in digestion and growth which will reduce the symptoms of acid reflux in your children. Most importantly limit high acid foods, carbonated beverages, high sugar drinks and spicy foods from your childrens diet. In addition there is an apparent link between childhood obesity and symptoms of heartburn in Children. Exercise and a healthy diet will go a long way in reducing symptoms of acid reflux in children

If you suspect your child is suffering from the symptoms of acid reflux you should consult your pediatrician or doctor for a proper diagnosis. Many symptoms of acid reflux in children are masked or are similar to those from other conditions. Most children naturally outgrow the acid reflux heartburn problems. However acid reflux symptoms in children if left untreated may lead to a more serious condition. Prescribed medications can be used in cases of severe symptoms or when GERD is diagnosed. Early diagnosis and treatment is the key to reducing and or curing the symptoms of acid reflux in children.

Choking can be a very startling and upsetting experience for many acid reflux sufferers, both infants and adults alike. The symptom of choking usually occurs at night when a person is sleeping, and choking is what tends to wake the person up who then usually violently coughs to clear their throat and catch their breath.

Why does acid reflux and choking occur? When acid reflux occurs during sleep, the body’s natural defenses against reflux are deactivated. For instance, you no longer have the ability to swallow saliva, which neutralizes acid, and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes, so it no longer blocks stomach acid from flowing into the esophagus. The deactivation of natural defenses can not only lead to heartburn, but can also allow stomach acid to creep up the esophagus and pool in the throat, enabling it to flow up into the mouth and nose. When this happens, the acid can be aspirated (sucked in when breathing), causing it to dribble into the lungs and windpipe, resulting in choking, and possible damage to the lungs.

There are a few factors that can cause acid reflux and choking at nighttime in adults. The following is a breakdown of what these major factors are, followed by what can be done to treat the problem:

- Sleeping supine – If you are sleeping in a supine position (laying flat on your back), stomach acid can freely flow into the esophagus and remain there for an extended period of time. This can cause heartburn, and can also lead to the acid rising further up the esophagus into the throat.

Prevention Tip – Sleep with your head and shoulders elevated, about 3-6 inches above the mattress. Use pillows to prop yourself up. The idea is to place your body on a slight incline so that acid cannot reach your upper esophagus. Sleeping on your left side may also prove beneficial as studies have found sleeping on your right side can make the problem worse.

- Sleeping in constricting clothing – Tight clothing that gathers at your waist places pressure on your stomach, and can force acid up and into your esophagus.

Prevention Tip – Wear loose fitting clothing/pajamas to bed and avoid pants, shorts, or underwear with tight elastic waistbands. While sleeping you don’t want to cause any unnecessary aggravation that increases the risk of reflux or makes it worse.

- Eating before bed – Many people make the mistake of eating or drinking directly before bed. Lying down too soon after eating slows down the digestion process, and sleeping on a full stomach dramatically increases the risk of heartburn, as well as acid reflux and choking.

Prevention Tip – Eliminate foods that trigger acid reflux symptoms (I.E. fatty and spicy foods, alcohol, etc.) from your regular diet, and avoid eating or drinking 2-3 hours before going to bed. If you are thirsty, only drink water slowly in small amounts.

How can I prevent acid reflux and choking in my child? Unfortunately, infants are also prone to acid reflux and the symptom of choking. The main reason for this is because the LES is not fully developed in many infants younger than 18 months. Signs of acid reflux in your infant include:

- Frequent spitting up combined with poor sleeping

- Extreme fussiness

- Frequent back or neck arching or stretching

- Refusal of food

- Slow weight gain

- Chronic sinus or ear infections

If your child has any of these symptoms you need to have him/her properly diagnosed by their pediatrician. Acid reflux is very complicated to diagnose in children, and only your child’s pediatrician can make this diagnosis and determine what treatment is best for your child. Never diagnose your child on your own.

Nevertheless should your infant have acid reflux and choking, the following are ways you can help prevent your little one from suffering:

- Modify the diet. This may mean giving your child:

- Smaller and frequent meals

- Thickened formula with rice cereal

- No foods that trigger acid reflux such as citrus foods, tomato products, carbonated beverages, spicy foods, chocolate, etc.

- Hold the child in an upright position during feeding

- Keep the child in an upright position for a minimum of an half an hour after eating

- Lay the child so they are on an incline so their head and shoulders are slightly elevated. This can be done using a wedge pillow.

- Your doctor may also prescribe medications.

Finally, anyone who is suffering from nighttime acid reflux and choking, or other symptoms, should speak to their doctor and obtain the necessary treatment to prevent symptoms from occurring, so that damage of the esophagus and/or lungs can be avoided.

Hyperacusis is defined as the unusual intolerance of a person to sounds that are just normal to people with perfect hearing. It is long accepted that the cause and treatment for hyperacusis is still very elusive even with modern science. Hyperacusis is believed to be a result of damaged sensory cells, which are located in the inner ear.

Handling the symptoms of hyperacusis in children may prove to be more difficult than it is to adults. First, to help a child deal with hyperacusis, their parents or guardians should first and foremost discover and accept that symptoms of hyperacusis do exist in their children.

It is important to observe your kids’ daily activities and how they respond to the sounds around them. One should evaluate how hyperacusis affects the life of the child. Gathering such information would help assess their condition. All people around the child should understand and empathize with the present situation in order to manage such ailment properly. Behavioral and sound desensitization can also be an option for treatment.

There are some ways which to evaluate and observe hyperacusis in children. Parents, or even the child, can create a journal where they can list specific sounds that are overly uncomfortable to their ears. Take note of the time and the place where these irritating sounds occur. Such a diary should only be kept updated for no longer than a week for the sake of the evaluation.

Upon diagnosis, doctors usually send out written information to the parents regarding the condition of their child. It is encouraged that guardians, including the people around children with hyperacusis, should always be ready to actively help out in creating ways and techniques on how to relieve the discomfort of hyperacusis in children.

If a child suffers form hyperacusis, he or she may feel misunderstood and out of place, especially in social get-togethers. It is then important that adults should show strong support to their kids during this stage. If a child is indeed diagnosed with hyperacusis, parents should never associate such condition to a mere attention deficit. Hyperacusis is a serious condition that needs special attention and medical treatment.

Sleep disorders in children are more common than is realized by most people, in fact around 42% of children in the US suffer from sleep disorders in one form or another. For instance sleep apnea is recognized as a common disorder amongst children of all age groups, with the most affected being the 3 to 6 years old. Figures show that in the US there are between 1.4 to 2 million children who suffer from sleep apnea alone.

Some different sleep disorders in children, including sleepwalking and bruxism:

* One common sleep disorder in children is sleepwalking also known as somnambulism, this is generally harmless if special care is taken to provide a safe sleeping environment. Sleeping children can some times be heard talking in their sleep or sleep with their eyes open, and strange as these disorders seem, will not harm the child most of the time.

* Sleep disorders in children may also take the form of Bruxism which is a destructive habit of grinding and gnashing the teeth while they are asleep, this can be a very disturbing disorder that can also cause dental problems. Children also often bang their heads or roll their heads, this usually happens when they are about to fall asleep. Again this is another sleep disorder that is usually harmless and they will soon outgrow it, before becoming teenagers.

* Other sleep disorders in children include nocturnal asthma and nocturnal seizures that are often very scary and stressful for everyone, including the child and parents, and needs medical treatment to get it under control. Also, sleep apnea can attack children, including premature newborns and also, the elderly.

* Yet another problem is heartburn which can be dangerous and although not seen as a sleep disorder can often run along side some of the common sleep disorders in children. The danger arises in the sleeping children when stomach acids regurgitates into the throat, whilst this can be due to an underlying medical problem it can also be eating food to close to bed time.

RLS, also known as restless leg syndrome is also a disorder that children can suffer from which is very stressful and irritating, this ailment can help to bring on nightmares, sleepwalking and insomnia.

A few of the sleep problems mentioned above can cause or lead to ALTE which is another name for Apparent Life Threatening Event, which is where a child looks lifeless, limp and pale in color. With this particular sleep problem it will be quite hard to wake the child and once awake they may be very listless, this is not a very nice experience for all involved.

However, the most scary and probably the least understood of the sleep disorders in children is SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, unfortunately there aren’t many if any treatments available for this disorder.

Research have shown that Gastro Esophageal Reflux (GER), generally called acid reflux, is common among children of varying age groups but it is often overlooked.

A pediatrician, with proper test done, can identify and resolve acid reflux in children. They will be aware of the problem and how your child is affected; enabling them to take proper samples and diagnoses it before getting out of hand.

Acid flowing from the stomach to the esophagus produces a burning sensation called Heartburn. While reddening and swelling of the esophagus due to acid backflow is known as Esophagitis. It causes extreme pain and can kill appetite. In severe cases, it can cause the inflamed part of the esophagus to bleed. Poor growths, difficulty in swallowing and breathing problems are some other complications
